An iron Age circular defensive Fort with 4m thick walls

A visit to Staigue Stone Fort does not take long but it is definitely worthwhile. Just a few kilometres off the Ring of Kerry near Sneem, Staigue Fort was most likely build as a defensive stronghold for a local lord or king and is believed to date from the late Iron Age, somewhere between 300 and 400 AD.

It is at the head of a valley leading down to the coast and surrounded by a ditch approximately 8m wide.

A tiny passage way leads through the 4m thick walls and once inside the 5.5 m high ring of stone totally surrounds and protects you. Built without mortar and using undressed stones, it is a considerable feat in engineering and construction.

At the entrance you'll find the brightly coloured Curran's Cottage cafe.
