Ireland's history carved in stone

Since 1832, more than 1.5 million people have been interred in Glasnevin, Ireland's largest cemetery. The rich and famous, paupers and politicians, artists, warriors and heroes, all rest side by side in this renowned Victorian Garden Cemetery. Here the social, political and historical timeline of Ireland's capital city is carved in stone.

Both the award-winning museum and the guided tours chart the fascinating history of this hallowed place, telling the stories of grave diggers and grave robbers, cholera epidemics, and world wars.

General History Tour

Our original tour takes in the graves of those who shaped the course of Irish History. An opportunity to visit the graves of James Larkin, Maud Gonne, Grace Gifford, Michael Collins, Eamon De Valera, Constance Markievicz, Brendan Behan, Luke Kelly and Daniel O'Connell, to name but a few!

A daily oration of Pádraig Pearse's famous speech is given at the grave of O' Donovan Rossa at 14:30pm.

Dead Interesting Tour

Our new tour takes in an alternative view of the varied heritage that Ireland's largest cemetery holds and the history within its walls. With lesser known stories of extraordinary lives and extraordinary events this is a tour that is for both the well acquainted with the cemetery and those who have never visited before, the secret history of Ireland's most well-known cemetery.

The O' Connell Tower

You can now climb the O'Connell Tower – Ireland's tallest round tower for the first time in over 45 years. After a comprehensive restoration programme, the tower's staircase is now accessible, complete with an exhibition about the legendary figure himself and the fascinating history of the tower.
Once at the top, you will enjoy 360 degree panoramic views of the sprawling grounds of the cemetery, the city of Dublin, Wicklow and the Irish Sea.

Genealogy

With over 1.5 million Irish genealogy burial records, explore family history and reveal stories from your family past.
