Since 1167 a lighthouse has been protecting the coastline of the Howth peninsula

Baily lighthouse

Baily lighthouse standing 13 meters high is set on cliffs that extend into Dublin Bay on the South-Eastern side of the Howth peninsula. Its light shines out 50 kms out over the Irish sea.

A small museum open upon appointment and established in 2000 displays memorabilia and artefacts collected by the lighthouse keepers.

An original lighthouse was built in 1667 by Sir Robert Reading, It was a coal-fired design. It was changed to operate via six oil lamps with a silvered parabolic mirror in 1790.

In 1814 a new tower was constructed and Baily lighthouse at that time had 24 oil lamps. Fog was a major problem at the site. The paddle steamer "Prince" of the City of Dublin Steam Packet Company struck cliffs just 2,500 metres away from Baily lighthouse in heavy fog. In 1853 the Queen Victoria was involved in a similar accident. This prompted the installation of a fog bell.

In the 1860's the lamp system was improved and in 1972 a 1,500 watt bulb with a rotating lens was installed that flashed every 20 seconds.

In 1996 Baily lighthouse was converted to run fully automatically. On the 24th March 1997 the last lighthouse keeper left Baily lighthouse 183 years and 7 days after the lighthouse first came into service.

The access road leading to the lighthouse is closed to the public but a birds-eye view of Baily lighthouse can be enjoyed from the car park on Howth Summit. Descend the summit to capture memorable photos of Baily lighthouse set on its rocky outcrop as it shines out over Dublin Bay.
