Since 1871 a lighthouse has stood shining to protect Cork harbour


Roches Point lighthouse


On the June 4th 1817 the first Roches Point lighthouse was established at Roches Point on the entrance to Cork harbour. In 1835 a larger lighthouse at 49 feet high and 12 feet in diameter was erected.

Titanic famously moored off Roche’s Point during its ill-fated transatlantic crossing of the Atlantic Ocean.

Roches Point lighthouse fog signal ceased operation in 2011 and in 1995 Roches Point lighthouse became fully automated.

For the 200th anniversary on the 4th June 2017 Roches Point lighthouse was opened to the public.
