A prehistoric site of tombs and monuments dating back over 5,000 years

Brú na Bóinne

Brú na Bóinne meaning 'palace’ or the ‘mansion’ of the Boyne is located on the East coast of Ireland. The site is home to three passage tombs called Knowth, Newgrange and Dowth. They were built in the Neolithic or Late Stone Age over 5,000 years ago.

Knowth tomb
Knowth is a large mound containing two passage tombs (Eastern and Western) and surrounded on the outside by 18 smaller mounds.
The Eastern passage tomb is 40 meters in length that leads to a chamber with a beehive shaped ceiling.
The Western passage tomb was once 34 meters in length but today narrows in width as you enter.

Newgrange tomb
The Newgrange passage tomb dates back to 3,200 BC and is 80 meters in diameter with 97 stones placed around its base. Within the structure the tombs were placed. There are a number of carved stones on display.

Dowth tomb
Visitors can visit the Dowth passage tomb directly without entering the Brú na Bóinne visitor centre. The tomb is 85 meters in diameter and there are an estimated 115 kerbstones positioned at its base but only about half this number are visable today and approximately 15 of them have stone carving.

Brú na Bóinne Visitor
Opening in 1987, the Brú na Bóinne Visitor centre tells visitors the story of the Neolithic tombs and their creators, history of the residents homes, clothing and the construction tool used. The centre explains the purpose of the tombs, how they were built and how the building materials were originally brought to the site.

An audio and visual show depicts the involvement of solar alignment over the Boyne Valley. Visitors can discover a replica of the actual chamber of Newgrange and the smaller chamber of Knowth.
