A prison in the heart of Dublin that first opened its doors in 1796 and closed in 1924

Inmates that were housed at Kilmainham Gaol had crimes ranging from petty offences such as stealing food to more serious crimes such as murder or rape. Convicts from many parts of Ireland were held at Kilmainham Gaol for long periods waiting to be transported to Australia.

Hard labour for a man consisted of manually breaking stones in the Stonebreakers’ Yard, and for women it meant working in the laundry. After 1844, inmates also made and repaired their own prison uniforms. Other work involved cleaning the cells and common areas, providing care (of a sort) to the 'lunatics'. Children whose sentences were longer than two weeks received weekly school lessons from the chaplain.

Visitors to Kilmainham Gaol are offered a guided tour and can explore the exhibition.

Two chapels are located with the walls of Kilmainham Gaol. One Catholic and one Protestant. Famously Joseph Plunkett and Grace Gifford in May 1916 were married in the Catholic chapel, just hours before Joseph Plunkett's execution.

Kilmainham Gaol West wing

Ernie O’Malley, Simon Donnelly, and Frank Teeling famously escaped from the West wing of Kilmainham Gaol in 1921.

Kilmainham Gaol East wing

The East wing with its huge skylight was where Members of the Fenian movement were held. Prisoners held in the East wing during the Irish civil war famously went on hunger strike. Michael Collins, In the Name of the Father was filmed in the East wing of Kilmainham Gaol.
