Port of Kinvara and Dunguaire Castle

Kinvara is a small fishing port in Galway Bay. His name means "head of the sea".

Fishermen still sail aboard the traditional Galway Hookers, with whose a "Cruinniu na mBad" competition is held each summer.

It is a small, colorful village with a few shops and a pub, the Pier Head, in which we recommend you to have lunch: the food is homemade, is good and the atmosphere very Irish.

Originally the port of Kinvara had of major economic value to Galway, but it is now better known for the 16th century castle that keeps its gateway : Dunguaire Castle.

His story goes back to the Hynes Clan who had him built on the ruins of the Royal Palace of Guaire mac Aidne Colmain, King of Connacht.

Its location was ideal to watch the bay and protect from hostiles.

Besides being very photogenic with beautiful colors at sunset, it can be visited and hosts medieval banquets every summer. You can book for about 40 € per person.

The port is also home of the Fleadh na gCuach, a festival of traditional Irish music.
