Discover the era of transatlantic flying boats and maritime life on the mystic River Shannon

In the village of Foynes on the banks of the Shannon Estuary on the Wild Atlantic Way lies the Foynes Flying Boat and Maritime Museum.

In a bygone age, the pictureque village of Foynes was the epicentre of the aviation world as the great flying boats criss-crossed the Atlantic Ocean and the world.

The Foynes flying boat museum captures this story by giving visitors a one-time opportunity of going aboard the full-size Boeing 314 Flying Boat and testing their flying skills in a Boeing 314 flight simulator.
Visitors of all ages can enjoy a comprehensive range of exhibits and interactive displays.

Foynes Maritime Museum

The Martime Museum allows you to relive the history and personality of the River Shannon. Much more than just water and docks, the museum gives a real insight into those who lived along side the River Shannon and how along with the change of the river it also changed their lives. Many stories are told about the transportation and emigration on the river during the famine.

Museum features

The Brendan O'Regan Restaurant

Experience a bygone era in 1940's surroundings in the O'Regan's restaurant whilst enjoying an afternoon tea, lunch or the world famous Irish coffee.

In 1943, Joe Sheridan, a chef and a highly skilled bartender famously served Irish coffee to passengers who returned to Foynes due to a cancelled fight from New York. He placed coffee in a glass and then topped it by pouring cream. Irish coffee from that day was officially created at the flying boat terminal at Foynes.
Foynes and the flying boats will be forever connected with the invention of Irish Coffee as they combined to give us today this uniquely Irish treat.
